16 Week Check In

We had our 16-week appointment today. This was not a very exciting visit, unless you find peeing in a cup an exhilarating experience. I did get to hear baby's heart beat again, but not without baby Shock putting up some resistance. We may have an Olympic swimmer or gymnast in there. It took a while for the doctor to target that little beating heart, but once found we heard it pumping away. Baby and I got a clean bill of health. We also received our referral for our next ultrasound, which is when we get to find out if Baby Shock is a he or a she! Stay tuned folks....February 3rd we will have an answer.

It's Momma Shock's World, I'm Just Livin' In It

I feel it's my turn to contribute a post to the Family Circus blog. My baby's momma has posted all the previous articles and I didn't want anyone following this blog to think that I had nothing to say about the topic at hand. I'm an excited, happy and nervous poppa-to-be. Having a kid is my first real life changing event. It's going to be a wild ride.

When a couple is expecting, 99% of the attention goes to the mother-to-be. I'm fine with that. I don't mind taking a backseat. It's refreshing not being the center of attention or the topic of conversation. I'm a supportive husband. I go to all the doctor's appointments so I can see the baby's progress and be able to listen to the doctor and ask questions firsthand. I've already read one dad-to-be book, and I'm working on my second. I go to the baby stores to shop for the baby items. My most supportive gesture is abstaining from alcohol during the pregnancy. I figure what ever Momma Shock shouldn't do, then I shouldn't do as well. Every beer commercial I see now makes me urn for a tall, cold one. Only six more months to go!

The biggest sacrifice has to be me giving up my Alaskan beard quest. Momma Shock can't travel in late May, and I'm not going without her. I'll compete in the next World Beard and Moustache Championship in 2011. The beard world can wait for me to conquer it later. For now, I'm taking one for the team.

Wild Ideas

Initially I had planned on waiting until we knew the baby's gender before I decided on a theme for the nursery. Once we went to Babies R' Us and saw all the cute things, I decided on a nursery with lots of animals, kind of like a zoo. It's not a Noah's Ark, Whinnie the Pooh or safari type theme. It is all about animals. I kind of got the inspiration from my own baby mobile that my sister-in-law rescued for me. We've already gotten the bedding set:

I plan on painting large animals on the walls of the nursery. Once the ceiling fan is installed, Atom will re-paint the room and then my work begins. I'll keep everyone posted on the progress.
