Week 12 Appointment & NT Sonogram

Today was our 12 week OB/GYN appointment. It was just like a regular well woman exam, but a few extra questions. So far I haven't put on any extra weight since last month, but that will be changing. We got to hear the heartbeat for the first time as well. The nurse said the heartbeat sounded great.

We decided on taking a Nuchal Translucency test to test for Down Syndrome and Trisomy 18/13. This involves a simple blood test and sonogram. It was not invasive at all. So combining the blood test and what they measured on the sonogram, we only have a 1 in 10,000 chance of the baby developing either disorder. This was fantastic news.

What was even better was this high tech sonogram. We saw the baby moving around like crazy. We heard the "pac-man" sounding heart beat (waka-waka-waka-waka), we saw baby's arms and legs, and the best part is that we saw baby Shock sucking it's thumb! How cute is that!? The tech snapped a pic while the baby was thumb sucking:

So our next visit is in another 4 weeks, but the next few appointments will be short and sweet with no goodies like sonograms until week 20. That's when we'll get to find out if this baby is a he or a she.
